American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA)

American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) advances the well-being of people in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, and Jordan. Through partnerships and close consultation with local groups and communities, ANERA responds to economic, health, and educational needs with sustainable solutions and also delivers humanitarian aid during emergencies. ANERA helps local institutions become more self-sufficient and effective in serving their communities. Every project is planned in consultation with the communities that ultimately benefit—an approach that ensures relevancy and commitment, and secures the long-term viability of the projects.

West Bank and Gaza Activities

The nature and scope of Partnership activities are unique to each country to ensure they are locally relevant and appropriate. In West Bank and Gaza, initial programming includes:

Breast Cancer Advocacy and Outreach: American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) will develop and lead activities that engage Palestinian women and families, care providers, and policy makers. Activities include trainings designed to strengthen the institutional capabilities of the Palestinian health sector, workshops to improve the technical competencies of health care providers, and targeted social marketing campaigns that seek to increase women’s awareness and knowledge of breast cancer and encourage screening.

Baseline Assessment: The Partnership will continue to implement activities that address key needs identified in the Baseline Assessment of Breast Cancer Awareness and Care: West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem (PDF 63 MB).

Partnership Develops Workshops for Nurses Treating Breast Cancer Patients
The Partnership, in collaboration with the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and regional partners, launched a new training workshop for nurses who treat women with breast cancer in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Led by ONS Trainers, the pilot training curriculum was developed with support from nurses in the region to build knowledge on how to treat breast cancer patients. In each location, ONS trainers worked with resident nurses and local experts to localize the training, ensuring that it is relevant to the country’s nursing community. The curriculum was translated into both Arabic and French.

The Partnership held workshops in the Palestinian Territories (November 2- 4, 2009) hosted by Bethlehem University with the support of the Ministry of Health for the Palestinian Authority. Forty participants attended the training in the West Bank and Gaza.

Patient Care: The Partnership will also develop joint workshops, research projects, trainings, and video-conferences between Palestinian, U.S. and other international experts on topics such as patient care, support groups, and patient navigation.
